Case Study: Steel Road Barriers for Indooroopilly Roundabout

The Project

Brisbane City Council has identified a busy intersection at Indooroopilly as a location for an upgrade to improve safety and reduce congestion.

Jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government, the Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade Project includes the construction of an overpass from Coonan Street over Moggill Road to improve overall intersection operation and safety for all road users.

The upgrade was awarded to a major contractor and is currently underway with construction planned for completion by early 2024.

The Challenges

The busy intersection at Moggill Road and Coonan Street needed to be modified to cater for future traffic demands, however, the area currently sees high traffic volumes and significant congestion in peak hour periods, with over 100,000 vehicles passing through the ageing intersection every day.

This meant that the contractor needed to ensure the utmost safety for both motorists and workers whilst construction was taking place.

Whilst concrete road barriers are robust and provide good protection for road work sites, the steel SafeZone barrier is lighter and easier to install whilst still offering excellent safety characteristics, and it was the clear choice for this project.

Jaybro’s Solution

Jaybro has recently introduced the SafeZone steel road barrier into our temporary barrier range, offering a MASH TL-4 rating that offers contractors one of the highest levels of roadside protection available.

Vehicles are constantly getting bigger and heavier, and there is a growing need to ensure road barrier design keeps up with safety requirements and the needs of road and infrastructure projects globally.

MASH testing on the SafeZone barrier shows that it provides predictable impact behaviour when impacted by a 10t truck travelling at 90km/h, impacting the barrier at 15 degrees. This means that according to the Austroads approval specification, contractors can confidently use SafeZone steel barriers on the road network whenever the signposted speed is 100km/hr.

Ideal for higher speed situations such as main road construction, the 5.8-metre long steel barriers are easy to install with a Hiab or crane truck, and quickly connect together allowing site setup to be completed efficiently.

For this project at Indooroopilly, the contractor used several long runs of SafeZone barriers, providing a compliant and effective safety measure at the busy intersection. The nature of this job meant that bends needed to be achieved which with the Safezone 5 and 10 degree bends handled seamlessly.

Jaybro worked with the Lead traffic consultant & the Site team to evaluate the best product suited (SafeZone). Jaybro also assisted in the drafting plans to design the required barrier layout, this was crucial due to having a very tight radius to achieve around the roundabout.

Jaybro also worked directly with the installers to ensure the correct installation procedures were followed and even attended the night install to offer on site assistance to the installer and contractor in regards to the correct installation of the Safezone barrier to meet LDS TL3/TL4 requirements.

The SafeZone is the first MASH TL-4 Limited Deflection steel road barrier on the market and is available from Jaybro.
