Improve Stormwater Quality with a SQID

sqid basket

SQID® stands for Stormwater Quality Improvement Device.

This simple and innovative product provides an inexpensive way to guard against pollutants and other debris from being washed into waterways.

Designed to provide a stormwater filtration system that is hydraulically efficient, easy to install and simple to maintain, the SQID range of devices are also economical. By removing litter, sediment and other pollutants from being transported to sensitive aquatic ecosystems, the SQID® traps help to improve stormwater quality.

The SQID® range of stormwater litter traps is designed with durability in mind, ensuring long-term performance in the field. Made from UV stabilised polyethylene and stainless steel, they are made of 100% recyclable materials.

Making it Easy to Comply with Environmental Guidelines

In Australia, environmental and water authorities encourage capturing stormwater pollutants at the source, allowing the least possible chance for sediment and debris to enter the stormwater system.

In Queensland, for example, the QLD Government Department of Environment reviewed urban stormwater quality management plans and guidelines to ensure stormwater inlet protection was included in their list of recommended pollution controls.

The SQID® range of litter and sediment traps was developed with this in mind, with an innovative approach to capturing and filtering right at the mouth of the drain. With many Councils urged to implement stormwater treatment plans that address critical pollution issues at the source, the SQID provides a perfect solution.

The system is primarily designed to capture and retain sediment and pollutants in areas such as:

  • Industrial complexes
  • Construction and development activities
  • Demolition works
  • Carparks
  • Courtyards and driveways, and
  • Kerbside channelling.

Both contractors and developers can reap the benefits of installing the SQID® system, by taking a best practice approach to ecologically sound construction.

The 450 SQID® Range

The SQID® is a pit insert for the primary treatment of stormwater at the source. The 450 x 450mm SQID® is ideal for use in driveways, gardens, courtyards and smaller residential applications. This model may also be used in some high-density urban developments with low flow requirements. This unit is manufactured from UV-stabilised polyethylene and is fitted with stainless steel mesh screens.

The SQID® 49060

This SQID® is a larger unit for treating stormwater at the source. Ideal for kerb inlet pits, carparks, industrial driveways, gardens and courtyards, it measures 900 x 600mm. Like the smaller 450 model, it can also be used for certain urban developments with high flow requirements. Manufactured from UV stabilised polyethylene and fitted with stainless steel mesh screens, this litter and sediment trap is ideal for managing pollution.

The 49060 RE Model SQID®

This RE unit is designed specifically for rear entry kerb inlet pits. This model is ideal for use on roads and in industrial driveways. Fitting pits up to 900 mm long x 600 wide, the bypass is equal to the additional width of the pit, i.e 750 or 1050 mm. The typical use sees water flow filtering through the treatment screens, and therefore these will have to be occluded before the bypass is required.

The 49090 2-Part SQID®

This litter filtration unit is designed for gully pits in large carparks, industrial driveways and green spaces. With a treatment size range of 900 mm x 900 wide, this unit is split down the middle to suit 2 part gully pits. The flow rate is approx 140L/s. The 2 part unit is flexible enough to be fitted under gully grates if necessary. The bypass is located in the centre overlap or through the wall of the unit. The typical use sees water flow filtering through the treatment screens, and therefore these will have to be occluded before the bypass is required.

SQID® Infiltration System

The SQID Infiltrator provides an all in one alternative to other pits on the market that are featured as part of infiltration systems. The SQID® 'InFil-trator 450' kit includes a SQID® inspired insert filter basket, durable polyethylene pit and a lightweight aluminium or polyethylene lid, creating an all in one pit, lid and filtration system.

The 46060 Model SQID®

This SQID® pit filter unit is a 600mm x 600mm insert designed for effective treatment of stormwater at its source. Ideal for carparks, industrial driveways, gardens and courtyards, this filtration basket is also suitable for some high density urban developments with medium flow requirements. Like many of the SQID range, it is made from UV-stabilised polyethylene and fitted with stainless steel mesh screens.

Environmental Benefits

A wide range of papers and reports have been published on the environmental benefits of the SQID.

All kinds of ‘gross pollutants’ - otherwise just known as rubbish - such as cigarette butts, bags, broken bottles, wrappers and straws are stopped at the source. All these items and many more have been found trapped in SQID® systems.

Along with simply catching litter, these simple traps also reduce the amount of loose vegetation in stormwater systems, which depletes the oxygen levels in the water as it decomposes thus contributing to blue-green algae blooms.

Additionally, field observation and experiments have shown that as litter and sediment is trapped in the SQID system, tiny pollutants below 2mm, such as supernutrients, trace metals, oil and grease become entrapped in the litter itself, and therefore stopped by the SQID.

Cost Benefits

The SQID is an affordable product that safeguards against the serious costs caused by blockages in the stormwater system. By reducing blockage risks further down the line, there is less requirement to replace damaged pipes. Pipes are often damaged by the scouring effect of hard rubbish. Large particles of concrete or sediment can be carried at high velocity inside pipes, thereby chipping away at the concrete and PVC interior. Choosing to install a SQID at the source of pollution helps reduce overall repair costs in the long run.

Cleaning & Maintenance

A small degree of maintenance is required to keep the SQID performing at its best. Smaller devices have handles making them easy to remove and empty. Larger devices can be cleaned out manually or with a road sweeper operated by road service crews. The manufacturer recommends that after a significant storm event SQID devices be emptied. Although an overflow mechanism allows the SQID to function normally when the treatment flow is 100 percent blocked, it is good practice to keep them clean and empty.

Installation

Products in the SQID range can be retrofitted into many existing pits and gully systems with very minor adaptations. Get in touch with Jaybro for further information or take a look at this installation video to see how easy it is to add a SQID to your project.
