Western Excelsior HPTRMs – TerraMat® PP5-Heavy Duty

Sydney Zoo Shark Batter, Westcon Landscapes - Western Sydney NSW

Project:

Embracing advanced technology and innovation to improve animal welfare, visitor engagement and education, Sydney Zoo, located in Western Sydney is home to a wide range of exotic and native animals. With clever habitat design, the zoo provides an experience that is more immersive and engaging than traditional zoos.

Sydney Zoo is home to over 1,000 species including a wide range of exotic and native animals, Australia’s largest Reptile and Nocturnal House and an aquarium.

Challenges/Solution

The shark enclosure, in particular, required erosion control protection along its batters of the enclosure. To ensure its long term durability and performance, a High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) was selected. The most appropriate synthetic mat chosen for this application was Terramat® PP5-Heavy Duty HPTRM.

Terramat® PP5-Heavy Duty is a fully synthetic, UV stable, High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) manufactured by weaving continuous, synthetic thread elements by way of a proprietary process to form a lofty, three-dimensional pattern. PP5-Heavy Duty is resistant to environmental and climatic conditions and provides high strength, durability and turf reinforcement performance.

Each roll of PP5-Heavy Duty is made in the USA and manufactured under Western Excelsior’s Quality Assurance Program to ensure a consistent distribution of strands and consistent thickness. PP5-Heavy Duty is constructed of UV stabilized, high strength, synthetic yarns to be incorporated into turf and/or the soil matrix. For typical applications, the expected design life of PP5-Heavy Duty is twenty-five years, however, it may be less or indefinite when fully exposed on site.

The steep batter, difficult construction access and required ease of installation meant that the rolled erosion control product option was best suited for this site. In addition, the high probability of low or even no revegetation occurring due to the steep slope and lack of growing medium meant that the UV stable woven fibre matrix was still able to provide some form of surface protection. The light-weight product also meant easier and faster installation and the ability to use standard fixing pins for anchorage.
