Project Snapshot
Glascott Landscape and Civil are working closely with the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) to deliver the urban renewal of Honeysuckle Waterfront.
This significant public space in Newcastle is being revitalised with a range of developments including a pristine waterfront park along the edge of Newcastle harbourside.
The new park will include sheltered picnic areas and covered BBQ facilities, along with extensive planting, paving, demolition, and unstructured play space.
Works are well underway with expected completion in June 2021.
The Challenges
Part of the design of this new public area includes the construction of large sandstone block steps at the harbour's edge, sheltered picnic seating, covered barbecue facilities and a maritime themed play area. Native trees are also being planted in the area.
Due to the nature of this construction activity and its location right on the water’s edge, it is highly likely that some silt will escape the site and enter the river. Therefore, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to keep the area clean and tidy, Glascott Landscape and Civil required a floating pollution trap curtain that could be hung in the water whilst construction was taking place.
Jaybro’s Solution
Jaybro’s landscaping supplies division provided a SILTmasta floating silt curtain and GF34 geo material on this project for Glascott Landscape and Civil at the Honeysuckle Project in Newcastle Harbour.
Silt Curtains
The SILTmasta Silt Curtain controls silt run off by acting as a floating barrier. Made from geotextile material with polystyrene floats and a ballast pocket at the bottom for a chain, it is easy to install in rivers, creeks and streams.
Floating silt curtains, also known as sediment curtains or flotation curtains are designed and used to control sediment, algae or debris movement in waterways. They consist of a high visibility reinforced plastic flotation pocket and a non-woven needle punched geotextile skirt to act as the filter and ballast pocket.
The SILTmasta Floating Silt Curtain restrains run off in bodies of water by acting as a floating silt barrier.
Non-woven Geotextiles
Jaybro also supplied mastaTEX Non-Woven geotextile which the Glascott team are using as a separation and filtration layer under the oversized sandstone steps down to the water’s edge. This will ensure the area is free draining without promoting erosion and undermining the sandstone blocks.
mastaTEX Non-Woven is a continuous filament geotextile made from highly durable virgin polyester fibres, which are resistant to all naturally occurring soil acids and alkalis. The textile is formed through needle punching in order to produce a product suitable for use in road & rail work, separation, drainage, protection and filtration works.
All mastaTEX Non-Woven geotextiles are manufactured to ISO 9001 quality assurance procedures, providing reliable and effective long term soil and ground improvement.
