Major Project: Safety supply for Sydney Metro
Sydney Metro Northwest
Sydney Metro City & South West
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project, comprising 31 new stations and over 66 kilometres of new rail. It is set to revolutionise the way Australia’s biggest city travels, with fast and reliable trains arriving every four minutes. This world-class metro rail system is set to drive the state’s economic growth well into the future.
Much of the new metro railway will run through two purpose designed and built tunnels. The project is made up of five stages, two of which Jaybro and Defender Safety are proud to be involved in. These are the Sydney Metro Northwest project (Stage 1) and Sydney Metro City & Southwest (Stage 2). Further projects extending into Sydney’s west are in the early stages.
The Sydney Metro Northwest project boasts Australia’s longest railway tunnels, running 15 kilometres from Bella Vista to Epping as part of Stage 1 of Sydney Metro. The City & Southwest project connects Chatswood to Sydenham with tunnels that run under Sydney Harbour and through the central business district. Specialist tunnel boring machines like the one pictured below will be utilised to cut the tunnels.
With a price tag exceeding $20 billion, work on the $8.3 billion Northwest and $12.5 billion City & Southwest projects will continue for another five or more years.

STAGE 1: SYDNEY METRO NORTHWEST
CPB Contractors, with its joint venture partners John Holland and Dragados, has been selected to deliver the new Sydney Metro Northwest project. This will be the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. Additionally it will deliver eight new railway stations, 4,000 commuter car spaces and a new high frequency train system to Sydney’s growing North West. This is part of the Northwest Rapid Transport (NRT) project to build the North West Rail Link.
John Holland has been awarded two packages of work for the Sydney Metro Northwest, one of which is the Stage 1 tunnels & stations civil works.
This $8.3 billion contract awarded to CPB John Holland Dragados (CPBJHD). It involves building the 15 kilometre twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping – the longest railway tunnels to ever be built in Australia. Additionally, the joint venture has been tasked with new train stations.
The overall Northwest Rail Link project is due for completion in 2034.
STAGE 2: CITY & SOUTHWEST
Joint Venture partners CPB Contractors, John Holland and Ghella, have been selected to deliver the new Sydney Metro City and Southwest project. This will extend the new metro network from Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour, through new railway stations in the CBD and west to Bankstown.
Ultimately this will total 66 km of new metro rail and revolutionise the way Sydney travels. Joint Venture partners CPB Contractors, John Holland and Ghella (JHCPBG) will deliver the $2.81 billion contract to deliver the Stage 2 tunnel and station excavation works.
The contract includes lengthy twin railway tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham, which will run under Sydney Harbour and through the CBD. Five purpose-built tunnel boring machines will be procured to dig the tunnels. These are specifically designed to excavate in the unique conditions underneath the harbour.
In addition, complex underground structures will be built for six new metro stations. A bespoke precast facility will also be set up in Marrickville. This facility will essentially produce nearly 100,000 concrete segments to line the 15 kilometres of tunnels.
JHCPBG are likely to complete tunneling and station excavation works by mid 2020.

Underground tunelling work presented a range of safety hazards
STAGE 1: SYDNEY METRO NORTHWEST: The underground tunneling environment presents a number of challenges. Throughout both the tunneling operations and the station construction, the CPBJHD joint venture team sought a supplier who could deliver approved PPE and workwear, ensuring their workers were protected.
In addition to high visibility workwear, gloves, and safety glasses, respirator fit testing was required to ensure the secure and effective fit of respiratory protective devices.
The project needed a supplier who could back up their products with services
STAGE 2: CITY & SOUTHWEST: Throughout both the tunneling operations and the station construction, joint venture partners CPB Contractors, John Holland and Ghella required a workplace safety specialist who could outfit their team safely, reliably and within budget. The project managers were seeking a supplier who could deliver a range of approved PPE and workwear as a one stop safety shop.
Additionally, respirator fit testing needed to be performed for all workers that needed respiratory protection devices. This would ensure the secure and effective fit of respiratory protective devices. In a similar fashion, authorised fit testing would confirm that the project managers were operating within the stipulations of Australian Standards.
Jaybro and our Defender Safety team supplied a wide range of products to meet the needs of the construction firms working on these projects. A wide ranging supply contract was established, enabling Jaybro to provide workers on site with a continued and timely supply of workwear, hand protection and safety glasses.

A wide ranging supply contract was established with JHCPBG, enabling Defender Safety to provide workers on site with a continued and timely supply of workwear, hand protection and safety glasses.
Rapper safety glasses and Force360 WORX 100 gloves were identified as good solutions for the workplace hazards that needed to be managed.
Rapper safety glasses are a simple yet effective Standards Approved safety spectacle with a one piece lens and wraparound design.
Likewise, the WORX glove range from Force360 is equally effective on the job. This range has been designed and developed in Australia to offer a multipurpose low cost product for high volume work environments. A foam nitrile coating provides excellent wet, dry and oil grip.
What’s more, respirator fit tests were conducted on site in accordance with AS/NZS1715. Using specialised testing equipment, Defender Safety assessed staff individually for fit and comfort. Each individual had their mask tested to ensure it formed an adequate seal and did not leak. A respirator without a good seal will not provide adequate defence against airborne gases and particulates.
This testing was performed individually to verify that each worker had the right protection for their unique face shape. It also ensured that the respirator provides the required level of protection.
Defender Safety is pleased to be the safety supplier of choice for JHCPBG’s Sydney Metro City and Southwest works.
