GEOmasta Drainage Solutions for Western Roads Upgrade

Victoria’s Western Roads Upgrade gets GEOmasta Geotextiles

Western Roads Upgrade, Winslow Constructors Australia, July 2020

PROJECT SNAPSHOT

Major Road Projects Victoria is undertaking the Western Roads Upgrade, a project focussing on essential upgrades to 8 main roads in Melbourne’s west, plus improvements to over 260km of road from Footscray to Werribee.

As part of this project, the Dohertys Road area in Laverton North is being upgraded to improve access to key freight routes and industrial areas.

With over 20,000 cars and trucks using Dohertys Road every day, upgrades to this key route within Melbourne’s western industrial precinct means it will be better connected to the M80 Freeway Corridor, Princes Freeway, and the Port of Melbourne.

THE CHALLENGES

Winslow Constructors Australia has been engaged to undertake the civil construction works including removing existing roundabouts and building new ones, road pavement, new drainage installation, new kerbs and channels and more. More than 5,000 tonnes of asphalt needed to be laid and over a kilometre of drainage constructed.

For the drainage component, Winslow Constructors Australia needed to build the channels to Major Road Projects Victoria’s specifications, including the use of approved geofabric to line the trenches.

JAYBRO’S SOLUTION

Jaybro supplied the project managers with GEOmasta Class A geotextiles, a non-woven polyester liner fabric that is ideal for use in drainage separation situations such as this. Workers laid the geofabric in the drainage channels to provide protection and separation between the ground and the ag pipe.

mastaTEX Non-Woven is a continuous filament geotextile made from highly durable virgin polyester fibres. The textile is formed through needle punching to produce a product suitable for use in a variety of roadwork applications, as well as drainage, separation protection and filtration projects.

It is typically used for subgrade or subsoil separation, road and slope stabilisation and as liner protection on a wide range of projects.

GEOmasta’s mastaTEX geofabric has been used on a multitude of projects throughout Victoria including as ground reinforcement for the West Gate Tunnel, stabilisation for this stormwater detention tank in Derrimut, and as a separation layer for a new AFL oval in Eynesbury.
