The project

The application required a shrinkage compensated material that could be applied as both trowelable and a dry-pack consistency to fill a void between sandstone and reinforced concrete elements next to a canal in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Alexandria.

Natural sandstone blocks were installed, lining both the vertical and sloped surfaces of the concrete canal. An existing concrete slab met the top of the vertical sandstone wall and a construction grout was required to pack the stepped void, resulting in a neat and tidy finish.

Integrated services company Silver Raven was contracted to complete the work, and with a reputation built on providing complex civil solutions (often problematic work environments), a product that was perfectly fit for purpose was critical.

The challenges

A professional, high quality finish was required due to the nature and location of the project. Large sandstone blocks provided an attractive finish on the angled sides of the canal, which is located close to commercial areas and public thoroughfares.

A void between the vertical sides of the canal and the existing driveway above meant a viscous grout was required that would perform well in the long term.

Aftek Penaflow Panel Grout was an ideal solution for the application, being a cementitious Class A grout that can be applied in thicknesses from 20mm to 150mm.

Based on a blend of Portland cement, Penaflow Panel Grout is the ideal choice for general purpose grouting, filling anchor bolts, cavities, gaps and core holes created by core drilling. It is shrinkage compensated and can be dry packed, rendered, rammed, poured, trowelled or paved.

An Australian made product, Aftek Penaflow Panel Grout requires only simple surface preparation, namely water saturation before applying to leak-proof and watertight formwork.
